The Discovery Coaching Difference
A different process. There are two key elements to our approach…discovery and coaching.
Discovery
Discovery is the most interesting, fun and successful way to learn things.
We see discovery as the most ‘natural’ learning method. Consider how quickly and easily young children learn about computers and technology in general.
It is not through manuals, lectures, workshops or books – it is through discovery by personally engaging with the topic. They are provoked to try things and think differently and it is this which triggers learning.
Coaching
Coaching is the most effective way of helping people to apply what they have learned.
It is an essential follow-up to discovery and serves to suggest tips, hints, processes, techniques and practices that will make full use of the learning.
It is widely accepted that we are learning all the time – the key question is ‘what’ are we learning?
Think about driving…if a person has unsafe driving habits…’practicing’ will not help. The more they drive the better they become at being a poor driver!
A coach is needed to provide insight about technique, provoke thought about different ways of doing things and assist them to change.
The Discovery Coaching model recognises that the above lessons apply directly to management and business. Merely repeating an activity or approach over and over again does not create a different result. To get a different result you have to either do different things… or do things differently.
A management coach provokes discovery and coaches the manager to use those discoveries wisely.
A Different Experience
Most people that we coach had not previously received any investment of this sort. They had all been exposed to the usual learning and development activities of training sessions, workshops, conferences, e-learning, personal study etc.
Managers tell us that Discovery Coaching provides significant and welcome differences to the usual learning models… the most mentioned differences are…
- The focus is on helping people to discover tips, hints and techniques that are practical and relevant to everyday management life. It is not about management theory.
- This is not a ‘sheep dip’ approach. It is a highly individual approach – the coaching is about a particular individual’s challenges, circumstances, experiences and development needs.
- The objective is to provide the ‘how’ to do things…not just ‘what’ should be done.
- The goal is to provoke people to act differently …not just know more.
- The process is valuable to all levels of management…from Directors through to Team Leaders.
- Managers enjoy the process and welcome the organisation’s investment in them.
- Discovery Coaching uses day to day challenges and work as development opportunities – this is much superior to a contrived environment such as a classroom. It also provides direct business benefits immediately.
- The benefits of the program cascade through all levels of the business impacting on work quality, efficiency and productivity.
- As managers improve their management capability it improves the quality of working life for all.
- The programme has long lasting benefits – it develops new and effective working habits.
